IGP to employers: Monitor your foreign workers

KUALA LUMPUR: Employers should monitor the movement of their foreign workers to ensure they don't get involved in any criminal activities.

Inspector General of police, Tan Sri Musa Hassan said employers should have a logbook system to record the movement of their employees.

He said, employers who are involved in construction should build a longhouse for their employees near their construction area so that they have a place to stay.

"Currently, the employees are not being controlled by the employers and they are doing everything as they like," he said at a dialogue with Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka on crime and changing social values in the Malaysian society on Friday.

The IGP said that employees who want to go out after their working hours should write down their details in the logbook so that the employers would know what they are doing.

Details such as name, where they going, the time they are out and back should be added in the logbook.

"It is a way to prevent those employees from committing crimes," he said adding 2% of the crimes committed in the country are by foreign workers.

Even though the legal workers are staying at the longhouses they are not being watched and illegal workers come and stay together with them.

He also said, employers for factory workers should also get accommodations for their employees.

"Many foreign workers who are working the factories are staying on their own and this can lead them to criminal activities," he added.
